Flag With Fifty-Six Stars
A Gift from the Survivors of Mauthausen
By Susan Goldman Rubin
$16.95 (h/c)/$6.95 (pb)This is an inspiring
tribute to humanity and hope preserved by the survivors of the Mauthausen
concentration camp, in defiance of the monstrous conditions they endured.
This is the story of a flag surreptitiously sewn from scraps of sheets and
jackets by detainees, as a gift for their American heroes. Working
from memory, the prisoners created this hand stitched flag, inadvertently
adding an extra row of stars. When the flag was presented to their
liberators, commanding officer Colonel Richard Seibel ordered that the flag
with fifty-six stars be flown proudly over the camp as a symbol of freedom.
Details of the Nazi atrocities are muted, but the sorrow, hunger,
hopelessness, and finally optimism shine through in this well researched
presentation. Ages 8-11. |
