Books for Children of the World
The Story of Jella Lepman
By Sydelle Pearl
$15.95 h/cJella Lepman fled to England from Germany to escape Hitler
during World War II. After the war, she was asked by the U.S. Army to
return to Germany as a cultural and educational advisor. As Jella traveled
through war torn Germany, she concluded that the children needed books
because so many had been destroyed during the war. Books would bring
hope and build understanding with those children and their families. Jella
solicited publishers world-wide for book donations which eventually became
an exhibition that traveled throughout Germany. The exhibition,
containing contributions from 20 international publishers, eventually
became a permanent international youth library. An inspirational story.
