With the Civil War underway, Private J. A. Joel is a Union soldier camped out with the rest of his unit in the mountains of West Virginia. He has no chance of going home for Passover, only two weeks away. He is homesick. But when one of the soldiers manages to arrange a shipment of matzah to be sent to their camp, Joel and and his company improvise a seder to remember using cider for wine, carrot tops for parsley and a brick to symbolize charoset.
